As Valentine’s Day approaches, I want to help you focus on the most basic point of this “holiday.” People love to get all riled up about how commercial it is and the pressure to buy or receive a dozen roses (or whatever it is that you feel pressured to buy or receive ). But if you can back yourself off the ledge and use Valentine’s Day to your advantage, it really, in its most basic form, is just a reminder to love a bit more obviously than usual. Who can argue with that? Love is all around us. It is good to know it. It is good to feel it. It is good to show it.
Remember the movie, Love Actually? Remember the opening scene?
“Whenever I get gloomy with the state of the world, I think about the arrivals gate at Heathrow Airport. General opinion’s starting to make out that we live in a world of hatred and greed, but I don’t see that. It seems to me that love is everywhere. Often it’s not particularly dignified or newsworthy, but it’s always there – fathers and sons, mothers and daughters, husbands and wives, boyfriends, girlfriends, old friends…If you look for it, I’ve got a sneaky feeling you’ll find that love actually is all around.”
If you disagree, you may not be paying attention. And I want you to.
One of the finest and purest forms of love for women are our girlfriends.
Who’s your very best girl?
When you ask people to describe their closest friends, the same types of adjectives are often used. Loyal, honest, trustworthy. Thoughtful, warm-hearted, brave. Funny and empathetic.
Someone who makes you laugh and see the humor in something not apparently humorous.
Especially at the right time…when you need it most.
Your Very Best Girl makes your best days even better.
Embraces your inner weirdo.
She will always laugh with you.
And love you.
And listen to you. And love the way you talk and all of your funny little habits.
She may be a new friend.
Or someone you’ve known all your life.
She may live next door or half way across the world.
She may have become Your Very Best Girl over time or it could have been love at first sight.
She will be by your side when your world is turned upside down, by happiness or sorrow.
She may be your sister or simply feel like your sister.
So go on. Enjoy Valentine’s Day. Give Your Very Best Girl a call, a hug or even a present. Why not? Whatever you do, just don’t forget Your Very Best Girl.
